The architectural intention
California coastal Shingle Style
COVE finds grandeur in a crafted roofscape rather than a glass-box gesture. Multiple intersecting gambrel and gabled roofs create a generous, varied silhouette. Weathered silver-gray cedar shingles bind the volumes together, while white trim gives the edges a crisp definition. Substantial stone chimneys anchor the composition and interrupt the roofline with weight and texture.
A deep wraparound veranda makes the transition to the landscape habitable. The broad lawn is edged with coastal grasses, and the distant Pacific horizon remains restrained: a setting for the architecture rather than its substitute. The concept pairs expansiveness with shelter, giving outdoor life a covered perimeter instead of relying solely on exposed terraces.
The material story is one of patina and maintenance, not frictionless perfection. Cedar, stone and painted trim suggest different ways of meeting coastal exposure. A site-specific version would need to address durability, drainage, coastal review and environmental conditions before its form could be treated as feasible. COVE is an original estate concept, not a description of an owned or available coastal property.
